And now onto September...

So to prepare for the September meeting...

As mentioned before, we'll be looking for a couple new additions to our group beginning in September. I have one interested party so far, and we'll be reviewing applications for suitable candidates. Assuming this doesn't take the whole meeting, the remainded of our time will be spent on discussing the art show that we talked about in the summer. We'll need to address the following:
- when it will happen
- guidelines for submissions
- what is the objective of the programme
- will there be prizes?
- eligiability of participants (i.e. age, etc)
- how will we handle intake of materials
- publicity and promotion
- should we host an event to kick it off?
So basically all the details. Hopefully, we can come to some agreement on these details at the September meeting; I'll then do what I need to do to push forward a proposal at the library and then hopefully by October we can work as a group on creating promotional materials (if you'd like). So give this some thought for next meeting. If the weather's good, maybe we can take our meeting to the balcony.

At some point this fall, we'll also be discussing ideas for programming in the winter and spring. If you can, try to think of other programmes like the poetry contest and the art show that encourage community participation and creative expression for teens. Try and think if there are any events we could host that relate to literacy and books (i.e. read-a-thon, book swap... whatever). We can start brainstorming these ideas here on the blog anytime.
Thanks, Andrea.

I have some ideas of other events that we could run:

i) I know that alot of people are interested in graphic novels, so we could hold a "graphic novel review contest".

People read various graphic novels, write reviews for them, and rate them either bronze, silver, and gold.

For each review you write you are entered into a raffle. At the end of the month (or however long we plan to let it run) we hold a little get together for all the people that submited their reviews.

We do the raffle at the get together, and (if it works out) possibly do a "graphic novel swap" at the get together... ive never done a book swap, so I dont know how its supposed to be done...

ii)We could run a teen poetry night (I think that the library might have had one before / might have tried to have one before). I think that it would work out if the library really publicized in all the schools, it would help out the numbers by alot.

Give the poetry night a cool name, and say that anyone is allowed to come as an audience member, but readers must be between the ages of 12 and... 18,19? (and should register before hand, probably just by email)

other things to think about: limit on poems per poet; props, costumes or instruments; judges?; restriction on content (if all ages are coming to hear it, must be appropriate); prizes?; food;... etc

iii)we could have events that some what relate to books, but are just fun crafty things.

ex: a)(well, this one is for kids) Jillian Jiggs and her pigs, you get the kids to bring in supplies and you make a pig.
b)sister hood of the travelling pants > bring in an old pair of jeans, or other material, and learn to transform it into a purse

iv) something similar to our art show / included in our art show > photojournalism/photography show

v) we could have a "teen zine" > a mpl library teen magazine, teens submit their work (short shorts, poems, editorials, art, photography, any writing..)

I especially like the 'zine idea. We had the previous TAG compile a newsletter, and it was really well-received, and the poetry contest, as you know was a hit.
Do you think publishing the 'zine would be something the TAG would want to take on as a project? We can discuss this at the meeting on Monday.
